As we all slowly fry our dopamine receptors and diminish our will to work, the SAT still expects us to sit for hours, digest dense passages, and answer tricky questions—all without scrolling away to check notifications. In this case, we have to work with what we have. Let’s put that brain to quick, efficient use! Although Tutoria’s notes for each Reading question type discuss quick strategies, I will share some popular ones.

Practice Makes Perfect!

At the end of the day, it’s all about how much you practiced your strategies. Even if you do not follow any of the tips we're about to discuss, there’s a good chance that practice will carry you to victory (a good SAT score). I also suggest reading meaningful passages from newspapers and mentally summarizing and analyzing them. When reading the passages on your exam, use a pointer (either your pencil or your finger) to stay focused on the text.

Predict the Answer

Wait a second, you misunderstood the title of this paragraph. Allow me to elaborate.

In the case where the question demands some sort of specific detail from the passage, the fastest way to find the correct answer is by first reading the question. Forget the paragraph for now and focus on what the question is asking; once you’ve deduced that, you can begin reading the passage. You already know what to look for, so your brain is automatically filtering out irrelevant details and honing in on the key information. This technique not only saves time but also helps prevent second-guessing, as you’ve already determined what the answer should look like before diving into the choices. Let’s look at an example:

"Despite their small size, bumblebees are remarkably efficient pollinators. Unlike honeybees, which primarily collect nectar, bumblebees use a technique called ‘buzz pollination’ to shake pollen loose from flowers. This method makes them particularly valuable for pollinating crops like tomatoes and blueberries."

Question:

According to the passage, what makes bumblebees especially effective pollinators?

A) Their ability to collect large amounts of nectar

B) Their use of a specialized technique to extract pollen

C) Their tendency to visit a wide variety of flowers

D) Their role in producing honey for agricultural use

How to Apply "Predict the Answer":

1. Read the Question First – The question asks what makes bumblebees effective pollinators.

2. Predict the Answer – Before looking at the choices, recall the key idea from the passage: bumblebees use "buzz pollination" to extract pollen.

3. Compare with Answer Choices – Now, match your prediction with the closest choice:

B) Their use of a specialized technique to extract pollen.

By predicting the answer before looking at the options, you reduce the chances of being tricked by cleverly worded distractors. Instead of getting lost in unnecessary details, you stay focused on what actually matters—finding the exact piece of evidence that answers the question. Try and solve a similar question without reading the question statement first; you’ll find that you will have to read the passage 2 times: one time before reading the question statement, and another time after reading the statement because you didn’t know what to look for at first – you can’t compromise a second in the SAT!

Mastering this skill takes practice, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll notice a big improvement in both speed and accuracy on the SAT Reading section.

Skimming

Let’s be real – no one has time to read through every single word in a long SAT passage. Care to know the key to finishing on time without missing crucial details? It’s skimming!

Instead of reading fast, read smart. When reading a passage, look out for the following things:

1. The first and last few lines: Sometimes, these contain the gist of the whole passage! The first few lines may introduce the main idea of the passage, while the last few may wrap up a thought.

2. Keywords and Transitions: Look for bold terms, dates, events, or contrast words.

3. Main ideas, not details: According to what the question is asking for (read the question first, please!), you may skip details that seem irrelevant.

Mastering this technique will allow you to fully understand the relevant details without wasting time on the irrelevant ones.

Read in Chunks

Train your brain to process sentences in chunks of text instead of individual words. This is a simple tip, but is very effective. The essence of a sentence is that it is a collection of words that make sense when they are put together.

For example, instead of reading “The essence of a sentence is that it is a collection of words which make sense when they are put together" with emphasis on each word, try reading:

"The essence of a sentence / is that it is a collection of words / which make sense when they are put together"

Many people read one word at a time, which slows them down. Instead, your brain can process entire phrases at once, making reading smoother and more efficient. Practicing this technique will help you navigate SAT reading passages with ease!

Use Context to Guess Unfamiliar Words Quickly

Let’s say you’ve stumbled across a really weird word in an SAT passage – one you’ve never seen or heard of before. Do not, I repeat, do NOT waste your time on trying to understand what the true meaning of this word is – all you need to know is what its meaning could be based on the context it is used in!

Example:

"The novel’s protagonist was known for his acrimonious debates, often leaving opponents agitated"

Even if you don’t know "acrimonious," you see "debates" + "leaving opponents agitated" → meaning it’s likely something harsh or argumentative.

Accept Your Fate

As I bring this little one-sided conversation to a close, I will remind you that, unfortunately, no matter how many reading tips you search up, if you have little practice in reading dense passages, you will be at a slight disadvantage. Time is against you, and you must do all you can to race ahead. The SAT isn't just a test you need to give to get into a good university. It allows you to test practical skills that you'll be using all your life. You must accept the fact that, yes, you do have to read all that.
